Field Engineer l

NebraskaLink is an optical fiber network operator that is based in Lincoln, Nebraska. The company supplies direct internet access, Ethernet transport, special access, private line, and optical carrier services to retail and wholesale customers.  The company operates an extensive network in Nebraska and has plans to further expand this network through construction, fiber leases and other strategic partnerships

NebraskaLink is seeking a Field Engineer. The successful candidate will be an important part of the NebraskaLink team and will be responsible for service delivery, including: estimating implementation costs, equipment installation, construction management, and customer/service implementation.

The successful candidate will be heavily involved in the coordination of network expansion, construction efforts and the following additional duties:

  • Develop accurate fiber/optical network construction estimates utilizing on-site field verification and contractor unit pricing lists.
  • Design and create network documentation and schematics using design templates or creating their own.
  • Conduct site surveys at customer premise.
  • Equipment installation at Central Office and Customer premise.
  • Fusion splice fiber optic cables.
  • Assist with Sales Engineering.
  • Utilize Project Management skills to effectively track individual projects through subtasks on time up to the final completion date or earlier.
  • Perform circuit completion testing utilizing both equipment software to test remotely, and industry standard Ethernet test equipment for on-site testing.
  • Perform emergency & preventative maintenance on fiber optic cables and equipment.
  • Perform on-site field inspection for NebraskaLink construction projects.
  • Design and stake new construction opportunities.
  • Perform maintenance on all huts, cabinets, generators and batteries.
  • Underground fiber optic cable locating.

Essential qualifications and skills:

  • Motivated self-starter with a passion and drive to start and complete projects.
  • Experience and understanding of outside plant construction techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of fiber optic networks – Cable types, nomenclature, and Industry quality standards.
  • Familiarity with the operation of fiber optic network test equipment.
  • Exceptional service orientation – experience in providing customer service and support that exceeds the expectations of internal and external clients.
  • Experience with project management processes, tools, and the ability to coordinate multiple projects with reproducible results.
  • Good communication skills – written and verbal.
  • Basic computer knowledge, and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Excellent problem solving and trouble resolution abilities.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Must be able to lift in excess of 75 pounds for short periods of time loading, unloading and installing equipment, and opening pull box or manhole covers.
  • Ability to work on a ladder at heights greater than 8 feet at times.
  • Ability to work in small spaces such as subfloor crawlspaces, attics, and manholes.
  • Must be able to travel extensively in and out of state with overnight stays.
  • Must be willing to participate in a department rotation for after hour’s on-call emergencies and overnight maintenances.
  • Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and clean driving record.


Preferred qualifications and skills

  • Experience installing equipment at Central Offices, Carrier facilities and customer facilities
  • Familiarity with Nebraska State, County, and City ROW requirements and application processes.
  • Experience planning and executing optical network expansion and construction.
  • Experience with designing and staking new fiber route designs.
  • Experience inspecting and construction contractors.
  • Experience mapping new routes in geographical information system software applications.



  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two or four year technical or college degree, or a minimum of 2 years telecommunications experience; or a combination of equivalent education and experience.

Job Description:

The Network Technician I position assists in provisioning, order turn-up, testing and circuit closeout for all customer and internal circuits on an all fiber optic Statewide Network.  The position requires the technician to work with internal NebraskaLink personnel as well as numerous state and nationwide partners to insure quality and dependability.  The Network Technician I will also perform first line daytime (or afterhours if needed) NOC and troubleshooting services within the Operation’s department.  The Network Technician I position will report to the Service Assurance Manager within the Operations Department.


  • Pre-testing of customer/internal circuits as assigned
  • Circuit and Network provisioning as assigned by Engineering
  • Assist OSP in testing and turn-up of customer circuits
  • Verify accuracy of order details before closeout
  • Perform all circuit closeout tasks assigned
  • Daytime first responder for NOC services and customer troubleshooting (afterhours may be required)
  • Monitor System alarms
  • Check in and/or order equipment
  • Update/True-up of inventory management software
  • Assist Engineering Department in core backbone equipment install, turn-up & testing
  • Upkeep and organization of Inventory room
  • Hands and Feet for installs as needed by OSP
  • All other duties assigned by management

Education and Experience:

  • Associates or Technical Degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science or other related field or a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a WAN related or other data communications position.
  • Experience in Layer 2 transport and Layer 3 is preferred
  • Knowledge of networking and TCP/IP v4 & v6
  • Knowledge of full suite of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Visio, etc.)
  • Previous NOC or circuit provisioning experience a plus
